The CAS Journal Ranking, developed by the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), categorizes all journals indexed in Clarivate's annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR) into two classification systems: Broad Category and Subcategory Partitions. The Broad Category organizes journals into 13 major disciplinary domains, while the Subcategory follows JCR's existing subject-specific taxonomy.
This ranking system utilizes JCR journal listings as its primary data source, incorporating metrics such as impact factors and citation frequencies. Data standardization processes ensure consistency (e.g., merging records for renamed journals based on Clarivate’s official announcements). Calculations employ a proprietary algorithm designed by CAS’s Center for Scientometrics.
The CAS Journal Ranking reflects a journal’s relative influence within its discipline, addressing longstanding issues in cross-disciplinary impact factor comparisons common in domestic evaluations. While valuable for researchers assessing journal prominence and academic evaluation frameworks, direct application to individual performance assessments requires caution. Notably, it excludes qualitative expert evaluations—results derive solely from quantitative analysis.
