How can users access the library and borrow library materials?

Can library cards be lent to others?

The library card is strictly for the exclusive use of the cardholder and must not be lent to others. Upon discovery, any borrowing or impersonation of another person's library card will result in the immediate detention of the card, and the user will face the consequences as stipulated by the relevant regulations.

What should I do if my University Identity Card is lost?

  • If the campus card is lost, it should be reported and replaced according to the relevant regulations at the designated campus department.

Do students and staff of our campus have an account of the CityUHK library, and can they access the CityUHK Library’s e-resources?

No. Due to the license agreements with the e-resource providers, access to the CityUHK Library’s online resources is currently restricted to officially enrolled students and employed staff of CityUHK.

Can users access the City University of Hong Kong Library?

Users can enter the CityUHK library and use library materials with a valid access card during library opening hours (except Revision and Examination Periods of CityUHK). Users should use the library materials according to library regulations and cooperate with librarians for inspections.

Can holders of the CityUHK library access card borrow books and use electronic resources?

The access card holders are only allowed to use the library materials within the library and are not permitted to borrow books and use electronic resources.

How to reserve and return a CityUHK Library Access Card?

Reservations must be made via CityUHK(DG) Library's system. The requester can collect the access card at the library’s service counter with his/her campus card.

After successful reservation, users must collect their card within 3 working days at the library service desk. Reservation will be cancelled automatically if the requester did not collect the access card on time.

The access card is valid for 7 days, starting from the date of collection. Failure to return the card on time may result in future reservation privileges.

Due to the limited number of access cards, each person can only reserve one card at a time.

Can users apply for a CityUHK library access card on-site at the CityUHK library?

CityUHK Library does not accept walk-in users. All users must present the access card to enter the library. The CityUHK library does not issue access cards on-site.

What should I do if my CityUHK library access card is lost or damaged?

Cardholders must report any damaged or lost cards to CityUHK(DG) Library immediately. In case of loss of the access card, borrowing privileges for both cards and books will be suspended. Users are required to go to the CityUHK Library to pay 100 HKD for a replacement card. Borrowing privileges will be restored once the new card is received by our library.

Does the library purchase textbooks for students?

The library can connect students with textbook suppliers, but these suppliers are separate from our regular book vendors. The library does not purchase textbooks or reference books for individual students and does not interfere with readers’ personal book purchases.

Are all textbooks and reference books available in the library? How many copies are there?

The library's collection of textbooks and reference books is based on the compulsory readings and additional readings listed in the course syllabus provided by instructors. The library strives to purchase these books and typically acquires up to two copies based on class size.

However, the availability of new textbooks and reference books depends on the course syllabus submitted by instructors, and the import process can be lengthy. As a result, there may be delays in ordering and receiving books.

Additionally, due to import regulations and policies, some books cannot be brought into the country or may only be available in specific editions for sale in mainland China. Therefore, the library cannot guarantee that all textbooks and reference books listed in the course syllabus will be procured or added to its collection.

Are textbooks and teaching aids available in e-books in the Library?

It is usually difficult for libraries to purchase e-books of course reserves one by one due to the limitation of selling e-books in the collection. Primo, the library resource discovery system, supports unified searching of paper and electronic books in the collection. When patrons search for teaching materials and reference books in the collection, if there are e-books with the same title, they will be displayed together in the search result list.

What are the resources in the library collection? How many?

At present, the library purchases a collection of about 70,000 paper books, about 350,000 electronic books, and more than 30 databases of various types, covering Chinese, English and a wide range of subject categories.

In addition, the library also collects OA(Open Access) resources, receives books donated by individuals and organisations, and preserves some valuable non-book materials through digitalisation and other means.

After being organised and processed, the above documentary resources can be retrieved through Primo, the library's resource discovery system.

The library is currently in the stage of building a basic collection, and the collection resources are being enriched and opened one after another.

How to search and use collection resources?

Primo is the library's resource discovery system for readers, providing a unified search for all kinds of collection resources. Primo can be accessed through the search box on the homepage of the library website or the menu bar of its official WeChat Account. By entering the keywords of the resources you want to search, you can search for books, e-books, journals, articles and other types of literature resources in the collection.

For paper resources, the search result will give information such as location, call number, and loan status; for electronic resources, the search result will give access links. Please note that electronic resources subscribed by the library usually need to be accessed under the campus network environment or authenticated by logging in to CARSI, etc. (For details, please refer to the introduction of the databases on the library's website).

What if the library does not have the resources (books, journals, databases, etc.) I want? Can I submit a request to the library?

After searching in Primo, the library's resource discovery system, if the target resource is not found, or the resource status is unavailable, you can submit a request or an acquisition request (login required). You can also go to ‘Purchase Request’ from the Primo top menu and submit a purchase request form. If you have a large number of resources to propose, please contact the library by email.

Please note that, in principle, materials that already in the library's collection will not be re-ordered. Due to the high costs of journals and databases subscriptions,

recommendation should be made by faculty members. If students want to recommend a purchase, they are advised to consult with teachers, who can then send an email to library.

How can I check my borrowing information?

You can access Primo, the library's resource discovery system, through the search box on the homepage of the library's website, or through the menu bar of its official WeChat Account, ‘Library-Lib Card’. After logging in, you can manage your library account to view current/past loans, request status, violations, and fines.
